JEE Tips : Physics

Hello Everyone.

This last week I've been real busy and now that the weekend is hear I finally have some free time. College life does get hectic sometimes, projects, assignments, preparing for labs and class tests! Thankfully the weekend comes just in time ;-).

Coming back to this post, Physics I believe is the easiest of the three. Chemistry requires lots of mugging up while Maths requires lots of practise. All Physics requires is knowledge of a few basic concepts and a brain to apply those concepts. Don't believe me? Consider this, the entire chapter of gravity and also the chapters on charges, is based on just one formula ( So much can be deduced from one formula(. That's the beauty of Physics. Appreciate it and you shall be rewarded.

Also keep the following things in mind :
  1. You just cannot ignore derivations and mug up all formulas. It might work in school exams and maybe even Mains, but if you want to come anywhere close to IIT, you've got to know how the formulas you use are derived.
  2. A basic knowledge of Maths is essential before you start of with Physics. AS one of my teachers beautifully put it:
Physics speaks in the language of Mathematics.
  3. Practise a lot. And be prepared to apply concepts. There may not be a ready made formula in some questions. In some cases you will have to go back to the basic concept and just Use Your Brain.
  4. The Important Chapters which you can't even think of leaving are Modern Physics, Mechanics, Electrostats, Electromagnetism and Thermodynamics.
  5. Sound is sightly tough and it also less important, but do make sure you learn Doppler's Effect ( just one formula).
  6. If it is hard for you to understand the derivations in waves, leave it, but do make sure you mug up the formulas.
  7. Mechanics is quite tough for a beginner, and it will take lots of time. But don't give up on it. Same with Electro-Magnetism and Elctrostats.
  8. Basically what I am saying is, don't leave anything in Physics, unless you really hate it. Questions can be asked easily which involve concepts of more than one chapter. Better be prepared.
  9. Don't attempt Irodov unless you are really sure about it. While it will surely boost your confidence, too much expertise in one subject isn't really recommended.
  10. Make it a point to solve HC Verma completely. I know everyone has this book but no one really solves it. In my school, if I told someone I'm solving HC Verma, everyone's general reaction was that it's so easy! They think it is easy after solving one or two questions, but solve it to the end and you will know that it isn't the easiest at all.
  11. Most Importantly, there are many shortcuts in Physics. If you have a very good teacher, awesome for you. If you don't, make sure you ask the right people about the shortcuts they know.
Note: Physics was my favourite, so maybe I'm being partial when I say don't leave any topic. But then, the speciality of physics is that it's all connected. Suppose you've studied gravity well. Then it won't be any problem for you to solve a question on charges.

When should a self study aspirant complete his jee syllabus if he is answering his exams in 2015?
When should a self study aspirant start answering full length jee tests?

    1. Try and complete the syllabus by February. JEE Mains will most probably be in April so you've go to finish the syllabus atleast one month in Advance. After that aim to do more of questions and practise papers.
If past papers are demoralising, don't worry and keep trying until the last week. Reserve the last week only for your strong areas.

  2. What would you suggest to anyone who starts his preparation now?Do I have any hope of a good rank in JEE Advanced 2015?Should I finish the entire syllabus or just partly?

    1. Are you a dropper? If yes then you have no choice. Start studying fast and study like mad, as much as you can without becoming insane :-P
If you are still in school, don't aim to be a dropper and set JEE 2016 as your target. This year's JEE should still be your target.
You can obviously get a good rank still but you have to work real hard!
And if you're aiming for JEE Advanced you obviously have to do the whole syllabus. Sure there are a few small topics you can leave, but then, that won't get you a good rank.

    2. Thanks, for the reply.I am not a dropper. Also,I am quite thorough with 3/4th of the syllabus upto the board level or you can say textbook level, but I don't feel its of any use as I cannot solve any questions from a book meant for Jee,so I am planning to restart everything again, but this time with jee books. Please tell me what do you mean by 'work real hard'.How many hours should I study if I can concentrate 3/4th of the time i study?Should I reduce my sleeping hours?

      Delete
    3. Since you've studied most of the theory, you should spend more time now on practising questions ( JEE Level ).
' Real hard ' because you are up against people studying for maybe the last 3 years. So obviously if you have less time, you'll have to put in more effort. But don't sacrifice sleep or anything else that'll harm your health. Physical fitness is important in order to get the maximum output from your efforts.
No. of hours varies from person to person, it would be better if you make a schedule and stick to it ( By schedule I mean the topic to be covered on a particular day, and not no of hours to be studied on a particular day ).

    8. How does one get on which topics he is strong at?I find all topics same to me and of same level.Does it mean I am lacking somewhere?According to u,wat is the problem with me?

      Delete
    9. If you are lacking somewhere you will find that out in your school or coaching marks. Or it may be that you are just not trying hard enough.
Otherwyse, if you are really good in all topics, that's a wonderful quality

      Delete
  3. What should one do for topics for which he is weak?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you have enough time left, work harder on your weaker topics, give them more time because if you don't ultimately your weaker topics will bring you down. However if you don't have enough time concentrate on your strengths.
The Ideal preparation would be to study your weak topics now and revise your strengths once the exams get closer.

  4. Bhaiya can I crack iit with under 500 rank. I have started studying from july and now I have 6 months left. I have completed electricity and magnetism from resnick walker ( theory ) but dont know what to solve- hcv dc pandey n resnick halliday? I hv started morrison and boyd last month and inorganic is left physical is almosr complete. I practice math daily from objective rd sharma .completed calculus n .3 ch of coordinate and trigo is left. R the books right. What to solve in physics and can I get the desired rank of under 500 in iit wid 6 months

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well obviously you will have to work very hard. There are students at coaching institutes who have been studying for 3 maybe even 4 years and you have to catch up, pretty fast. So you will have to work real hard. Do Physics from HC Verma if you are not sure about your concepts or DC Pandey if you want to improve your speed. You don't have time for Halliday now although it is a wonderful book.
Keep practicing Maths daily. Don't stop that. Also make sure your speed is not too slow.
For Organic I don't know what kind of questions are in Boyd, but just remember that you need to practice lots of objective questions, JEE type.
Maintain a good time table and stick to it for the next 6 months. Study "EVERYDAY" from 9 to 12 and 2 to 5. Do this everyday and you can achieve anything.

  5. This is my last attempt .bhaiya with the portion I hav said to be be complete and with those still left can get under 500 rank. I am very dedicated and passionate bout it.bhaiya what problem I face is that I can understand everything and even able to solve jee past questions. Not all of them but in 60 40 ratio. But it takes very much time to solve it.i read theory first very deeply n then attempt iit questions n solve it.even if I dont I can understand the solution fully but takes very much time.i am a slow learner. Also I dont know why I dont get marks in resonance aits either its very difficult or I m very weak.bhaiya this is my final chance how can I get under 500 rank in advanced

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And for speed, concentrate more on practicing objective questions. No one can teach you each and every shortcut, you've got to practice and discover them yourselves. Just keep practicing. If you are passionate you can surely get a good rank. All the Best

    1. I don't think I would recommend self study. There's way too much competition out there. You need proper guidance. You can continue self study but do get some Material from a good coaching institute and give the FIITJEE AITS or some other similar exam series.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You may be studying theory also now which will take up some time. Remember in JEE Mains you have to do 30 questions in one hour. Try and stick to this time limit. And for Advanced, 20 questions in one hour.

  9. Bhaiya halliday resnick walker is good book only for theory or can I also solve the problem s from it? Whats the difference between its question and iit questions

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can solve problems from it, only issue is that the book does not have answers to all the questions. Halliday Resnick is interesting also, but you can't build up speed by practicing subjective questions. There is less time left now, concentrate more on speed.

  10. Is it true bhaiya that in maths practice means learning steps? In which we discover new things ways to solve which approach to take for which questions? And while solving a jee past year ques we have to recall as well as relate those things to the question at hand. Is learning steps the only way to master maths? My maths is weakest and chem is good .phy is in between. Bhaiya while u were giving ur iit in examination hall when u saw a maths questions what did u think-(i have seen this question in the past, here mod is involved so I do this that..did u first have to think about it or was it easy for u just at d first sight) as there are several questions to be solved in a limited time how didi u approach for them.? Also how did u study maths(solved the examples or attempted them first without seeing solution) maths decide rank so I want to improve it

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In a way yes. Thing is, you have to solve 20 questions in 1 hour. Many people can solve it all if they are given three - four hours. But to solve it in that 1 hour, you need to develop your thinking ability, the ability to determine the course of action. And that comes only with practice. Keep practicing and after a few months you will realize what I mean by this. Attempt questions first on your own. Then if you think it took you too long, look at the solution. And yes, after practicing you will be able to think as you mentioned.

I mean I take a lot of time to complete a ch n when I start solving questions I find so many of them that takes too much time to finish n I end up doing a single ch for many days. N I always feel that I have forgotten most of d theory while attempting a ques.
What did u do ?: complete d theory n then do all its related questions in a single go or do it in parts (I start forgetting theory when I solve in parts) I don't feel satisfied usually

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you are in 11 there's still time left to sort out everything. You may be taking too much time because Physics may not be that interesting for you. Read through a chapter fast and make a list of all important formulae. Then move on to questions. The first step should be done fast. Go back to theory when you can't solve a particular question ( This way you won't forget it, plain theory is quite easy to forget, but if you connect it to questions or maybe connect it to tables or notes that you make, then it'll stay ).

    1. You will obviously have an edge but you don't have that much time. If you want to clear your concepts however, that is one of the best books. If you can manage to give time to Maths and Chemistry as well while solving Halliday, you should go ahead with it.

  16. If once I solve halliday will I need to solve anycother book like dc and hcv for cementing 2 digit rank? What is the best option e in physical rc Mukherjee? how did u manage inorganic

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For a two digit rank you have to do objective questions to build speed as well. Entrance exams are not just a test of concepts.
In physical I personally couldn't find a book which did not have lots of errors. I studied past papers a lot for physical Chemistry. And Inorganic is tough, if you want a two digit rank, buy a good book, get a copy of the syllabus study and make notes of everything you think is important and revise your notes every once in a while.

    1. Yeah I have been through this stage. You are all confused. You've studied most of the things, you're scared whether what you've studied is enough and you basically have no idea what to do next. I've been there and trust me, the only thing you have to do now is carry on. Keep carrying on no matter how hard it might be. And about balancing time, only you know how you utilize/waste your time. So only you can improve your time management. Remember, as long as you keep yourself motivated, you will find a way.

  20. I am not able to figure it out that in some questions of limits existence of limit is check first ie LHL N RHL are evaluated first and in some questions limit is found by making it a determinate function ie by factorization by rationalisation by using std formula. Why is it so? How to guess in which questions lhl rhl should be checked and in which questions limits should be evaluated directly. ..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Always remember the basics are always right.
A limit only exists if the LHL=RHL.
However if you are checking the limit at +or- infinity, LHL and RHL don't really matter.
In most other cases they will matter.
Also, the special cases are used to save time. So if there is a special case you don't need to worry about which side you are approaching from.
eg. Lim x->0 [(1+x)^(1/x)] =e. This is a special case ( I admit its a very simple one, but its the simples I could think of ). So in special cases, like this don't think about whether x is positive or negative.
But there can be exceptions. Be careful with trigonometric eqns, eqns involving square roots and any other equation that looks complex. Also you always need to check LHL=RHL in cases where function is defined differently in different intervals.

    1. The thing about shortcuts is, they are not universal. However once you practice enough questions, you will be able to see that some questions do have shortcuts. ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ok, i just went through it.
A macroscopic property is one which you can measure with an instrument.
A microscopic property is one you can't measure directly, but all your logic and Mathematics, tells you that it exists and its value also can be determined.
Macro/micro-scopic has nothing to do with the material. Its just what you can and can't measure directly.
Only the specific resistivity depends directly on the material. From there on it is just Maths.
E=V/L so E will depend on the length of conductor. And J = I/A so where I=V/R and R= (roe)*l/A. Therefore do the math, Area cancels out and both the above quantities depend on the length of the conductor.

      Delete
    2. Ok thanks bhaiya.got it.this means that J depends only on length (no need to check area for it) in inverse ratio.more.specifically it depends on V/ L.also bhaiya how do decide Vd in different wires with diff areas and length and in same wire with diff regions of diff areas(don't hv 6th ques answer so confused in Vd)

And Bhaiya u hv written that capacitor will discharge only when it's V > the battery's V .by this did u mean the capacitors potential diff decreases and that of battery's increases until the equillibrium is reached and potential between the top plate of capacity and battery's + terminaL are equal so v in that part is 0 similarly the potential of - plate and the other capacitor plate become equal so E in the wire is 0 ? Or did u mean something else?what would happen if battery's v> capacitors?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Then You can contact me on Gmail.
In problems when we consider an Ideal battery, it's potential does not change irrespective of amount or direction of current flowing through it.
So if the capacitor has higher potential across it, current will flow as long as the potential of the capacitor does not drop down to that of the battery.

In any question, you assume ideal conditions, so the potential of the battery will never change.

If the cell has greater potential the battery, it will be a case of charging capacitor.

Contact me on Gmail. I'll also be deleting some old comments, this post has become quite long :-P

  41. Bhaiya I understood ur explanation . 1. Yes you have understood the correct answer now.
And you are going in the right direction. Will be giving any exam series at your coaching institute?
The problem you might face is, solving subjective questions does not build up speed. So you may be going slow without realising it. Halliday questions are very good, but Halliday also doesn't cover the complete JEE syllabus.

Make sure you cover the left out topics, and also the speed and objective questions tricks part. If you get practise on objective questions at your coaching then it is fine. Also in your schedule to keep time for past year's JEE questions.

    1. Just mail it. I check mail everyday. And if your marks are improving stick to your study plan. And give the aits even if it is tough and keep trying to improve.

  48. For most of the students who are self studying there are no "right people" or "great teachers" who would provide them shortcuts. Why don't you create a post that would contain shortcuts that were helpful to you? That would be a great help to many students.
